Privacy notice

Last updated 28 September 2026

In short: Flâne has no accounts, your progress stays on your own phone, and the only personal data we hold comes from purchases, which Stripe handles. This notice says exactly what happens to what, and it is written to be read.

1. Who is responsible

2. What stays on your device

Your progress, settings, saved places and walks of your own are stored in your browser’s local storage, on the device itself. They are never sent to us. You can export them as a file or erase them from the app’s settings, and clearing the browser’s site data removes them too.

Wander mode and the “near me” search read your position on the device to work out what is close to you. Your position never leaves the device and we do not store it.

3. When you buy

Payment happens on Stripe’s page. Stripe collects your name, email address, card details and country, and processes them under its own privacy policy. We never see your card number. From Stripe we receive your email address, what you bought, the amount, the date and a payment reference.

We use this to deliver your purchase, to restore it when you enter your email on another device, to answer you if you write to us, and to keep the accounting records the law requires. The legal bases are the contract with you and our legal obligations. We keep payment records for as long as tax and accounting law requires, and no longer.

4. Restoring a purchase

When you type your email under Restore, our server asks Stripe whether that address has a completed payment, and returns the answer to your device. We do not build a list of these requests; we only count them briefly to stop anyone guessing addresses.

5. Hosting and technical logs

Flâne is served by Netlify. Like any web host it keeps short-lived technical logs of requests, including your IP address, your browser and the time, which we use only for security and to keep the site running. Our own small server functions count requests per IP address in memory for a few minutes to prevent abuse, and keep nothing afterwards. The legal basis is our legitimate interest in a secure service.

6. Content loaded from other services

The map tiles come from OpenFreeMap and the photographs from Wikimedia Commons, so those servers see your IP address and the file requested, as with any web page that shows an image. Links to Google Street View open Google’s own site under Google’s policy. If the automatic exam marker is switched on, the reading you write for the final exam is sent to Anthropic to be marked, under its API terms, and we do not store it.

7. Cookies and tracking

We set no cookies, we run no analytics and we load no advertising pixels. The app uses local storage only to work, as described above. Should we ever add a measurement pixel to the presentation page, it would load only after you agreed to it.

8. Emails

Stripe sends you a receipt when you buy. We write to you only about your purchase or in reply to your messages, and we send no newsletter unless you ask for one.

9. Where data is processed

Stripe, Netlify and, if the marker is on, Anthropic may process data in the United States. They do so under the safeguards European law recognises, such as the EU–US Data Privacy Framework and the standard contractual clauses.

10. Children

Flâne is not aimed at children under sixteen, and we do not knowingly collect their data.

11. Your rights

You can ask us what we hold about you, have it corrected or deleted, restrict or object to its use, and receive it in a portable form. Write to hello@getflane.com and we will answer within a month. You can also complain to the Office of the Commissioner for Personal Data Protection in Cyprus, or to the data protection authority of the country where you live.

12. Changes to this notice

We may update this notice as Flâne changes. The date at the top tells you when it last did.
